Satisfy your hunger for food and philosophy on April 25th at the new Marsh Theater location in Berkeley. Join Philosophy Talk for two live recording sessions and a lunch break in between where you can break bread with Philosophy Talk co-hosts John Perry and Ken Taylor.
11:00am Show: Democracy and the Press
Our founding fathers believed that a free press would serve democracy by promoting unfettered political debate and by exposing the actions of the government to the harsh scrutiny of an informed and engaged populace. In today’s media landscape, however, large conglomerates have become part of the entrenched power structure and are driven as much by the profit motive as by a sense of public mission. And even the most well-intentioned journalists sometimes find it wiser to suck up to power than to challenge it. Even the untamed cacophony of competing voices unleashed by the internet provides as much dis-information as information. In such a media landscape, is it still possible to believe that the press lives up to the lofty ideals of our founding fathers? If not, how might we reform the media so that it once again serves to promote and sustain democracy? Join John and Ken and their guest, former TV news anchor Leslie Griffith, as they discuss Democracy and the Press.
12-30 - 2:00 Break Bread with John, Ken, and the whole Philosophy Talk Crew
3:00pm Show: Social Reality
Few things affect our lives as much as fact that we are citizens of one country rather than another. The government of, the economy of, and the rights recognized and opportunities provided by the country we live in shape our lives. But how real are any of these facts and things? Without human beliefs, and societies of humans, there would be no states, no facts of citizenship, no money, and few opportunities. Are our lives built on ontological fluff? Ken and John discuss the metaphysics of the social with famed Berkeley philosopher John Searle, author of The Construction of Social Reality.

This sounds like anThis sounds like an incredible event—food, philosophy, and thought-provoking discussions all in one! The topic of democracy and the press is especially relevant today, given how media influences public opinion and political discourse. It’ll be interesting to hear insights from John, Ken, and Leslie Griffith on how the press can still uphold democratic values in such a complex landscape.
Also, since there’s a lunch break in between, I can’t help but wonder—what’s on the menu? Maybe something inspired by the Sonic happy hour would be a fun addition to the discussion! Looking forward to an engaging and mind-expanding event.

This sounds like such anThis sounds like such an interesting event! I love how food and philosophy can come together like this. It reminds me of how food often sparks deep conversations in Singapore, too. For example, the diverse dishes like laksa, chili crab, and kaya toast don’t just fill your stomach, they often make for lively discussions about taste and tradition. If you're ever curious about where to try these dishes in Singapore, imenusg is a great website to explore. It has menus from all sorts of restaurants across the city, making it easy to plan your next food adventure.

Really enjoyed thisReally enjoyed this exploration of the philosophical side of food — it’s fascinating how something so everyday can be deeply tied to identity, ethics, and culture. On a practical note, for those interested in how these ideas play out in mainstream food choices, the Panda Express Menu offers an interesting glimpse into how fast food adapts to changing tastes and values.

This event captures theThis event captures the essence of how food and conversation can intertwine to elevate both the body and the mind—something Zaxby’s fans can appreciate on a different level. Just as Philosophy Talk invites guests to “break bread” between deep dives into democracy and social reality, Zaxby’s creates its own gathering space with meals that bring people together—whether over a Chicken Finger Plate or a shareable Zalad platter from Zaxbys secret menu. Both settings remind us that mealtime can be more than nourishment; it can be a platform for dialogue, connection, and reflection on what truly shapes our society.
