What Is It

Nerves, neurons, muscles, sinew—somehow they come together to form a person with a mind. In fact, everything we know of that appears to have a mind is made of flesh and blood. Does that mean the mind is essentially cellular? For example, does consciousness depend on a particular neural substrate? Or could a mind be made of copper and gold wiring? And what can the study of animal biology tell us about the nature of the consciousness? Josh and Ray probe the mind of Peter Godfrey-Smith from the University of Sydney, author of Metazoa: Animal Life and the Birth of the Mind.
